Radio
The information we will offer for Suriname is more of a history lesson as
that's how we learned about the media, the culture and the country in general.
First of all, the area predominately speaks the Dutch language with a little
Creole and everyone speaks and understands English. There are 20 radio stations
and most broadcast in Dutch ... the 2 top stations have the highest listenership
and they target all age groups and genders from 13-65 years of age ... RADIO
10 and ABC 101.7 FM. Commercials are best recorded in Dutch and each station
will charge a production fee that will cover talent, studio session and translation.
The cost is nominal. Both stations reach the northern, most populated area
of country including the capital, Paramaribo, and all the surrounding districts.
Now, let's go back in time to the first radio station in Suriname,
ABC, and its owner, Andre Kamperveen, who opened its doors in
1975. Andre's ABC - FM featured music, news, sports and lively
conversation. The station always catered to their community audience
and there was great acceptance and interaction. ABC radio became
the voice of the people, and a main source of the area's information
and entertainment. In 1982 the government was overthrown by a
military dictatorship who killed many of the area's most influential
people ... attorneys, media executives, city businessmen and
government leaders. Andre Kamperveen was one of those men. The
station closed that year. Andre's son, Henk, went into exile
in Europe and stayed there until Suriname returned to a democracy
in 1987.
In 1993, Henk Kemperveen started up ABC Radio to broadcast the
same format his father started. To this day, the station features
a mix of music from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and today's adult
contemporary hits. They cater to children with various programs
in the late afternoon, teen programs adult music, news/talk and
sports shows. ABC Radio also features a local favorite, "Kasako" ...
a blend of calypso, salsa, and Caribbean dance music. The multi
ethnic population goes crazy for the stuff!
Today, we find most Suriname broadcast professionals cut their
teeth on ABC as they once worked for the station. Now, many of
them operate their own stations. AND ........
RADIO 10 is another leader in the Suriname radio market. Its
owner, formerly with ABC, began broadcast of his station in the
late 90's and offers a similar format. When you've got a pioneer
station like ABC the others follow.
